A STORIED PROGRAM
Blacksburg High School has had a long tradition of success with its boys soccer program. The program has won the Virginia State Championship in 1989, 1993, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2018. The program has also been Virginia State Runner Ups in 1990, 1992, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Head Coach Shelley Blumenthal has led Blacksburg to 12 state championships in 28 seasons. As head coach, Shelley has an overall record of 560 victories, 49 losses, and 24 ties, good for a winning percentage of 92%.
Blacksburg has had five High School All-Americans: Alistair Moore (2009), Michael Mecham (2012), Geinda Smith (2013), Austin Bissell (2018), and Edric Zhang (2023). Additionally, there have been thirteen Scholar All-Americans: Stuart Dowling (2000), Jamie Talbot (2002), Michael Orr (2000), Tim Becker (2008), Matt Becker (2007), Jackson Rankin (2009), Andrew Kim (2014), Harris Salom (2017), Joe Carman (2017), Daniel Salom (2020), Edric Zhang (2023), Kai Feng (2023) and Sean DeLorenzo (2024).

After the 2023 season, Edric Zhang became the first Blacksburg High School Boys' soccer player to win the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year award and Edric was also awarded the National Gatorade Academic Achievement Award at the 2023 ESPY Awards.
The program started in 1983. Cary Green helped begin the program and coached the Indians through 1986. His record at Blacksburg was 34 wins, 10 losses, and 2 ties. Pat Johnson took over in 1987 and continued to coach through 1991. Coach Johnson led the Indians to 65 wins, 9 losses, 3 ties, and the first-ever Virginia State Championship in 1989. Shelley Blumenthal assumed the role of head coach after serving as an assistant for the 1990 and 1991 campaigns.
